Secret smartphone trick for clearer calls even when you have a bad signal

Smartphones are incredible pieces of technology that have changed our lives for the better. We can do so many things with these handy gadgets that you probably never dreamed of a couple decades ago. A perfect example is the ability to have face-to-face conversations with anyone, anywhere in the world. Isn’t that amazing?

Your gadget seems to have limitless functionality. That’s why it’s so frustrating when you can’t make a simple call due to a poor signal. Good news, there’s now a simple way to fix this problem.

How to make calls with poor cell signal

I have first-hand experience with this frustrating problem. The cell signal inside my kitchen is terrible. Whenever I am in the middle of a phone call in that room, it drops nine times out of 10. Ugh!

Fortunately, there is a simple way to bypass this issue. Enable Wi-Fi calling on your smartphone.

Enabling this feature lets you make and receive calls and text messages through Wi-Fi instead of your mobile carrier’s cell network. This is great for when you know you’re in a “dead zone” like my kitchen.

You don’t even need to be at home for this trick to work. Anytime you are connected to any Wi-Fi network, you can make these calls. It’s available on Apple and most Android gadgets.

Apple

The Wi-Fi calling feature is off by default. You will need to go into your settings to turn it on. Here’s how:

Open Settings >> Scroll down and tap Phone >> Tap Wi-Fi Calling >> slide the toggle next to Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone On.

Once you enable this feature you will be asked to enter your home address. This step is to let emergency services know your home location if you ever dial 911 over Wi-Fi.

Android

For Android users, you’ll need to check with your carrier to make sure it offers Wi-Fi calling. Most do within the U.S., but if you don’t see it listed as a feature it might not be available to you.

Here are the steps to enable Wi-Fi calling for Android gadgets:

Open the Phone app on your device >> Tap More >> Settings >> Tap Calls >> Tap Wi-Fi Calling on. (If you don’t see this option, your carrier doesn’t support the feature.)

After you have set up this feature, you can make calls over Wi-Fi as if it were a regular cell network. You’ll see “Wi-Fi calling” in the notification screen when making a call.

When you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, your calls will use your mobile network like normal. It’s that simple.
