Recall alert: Check your home for this dangerous product before someone gets hurt

Clothing steamers are different from the traditional hot steam iron. Regular irons use a combination of heated water and a flat surface. A clothing steamer only uses super-heated water to get wrinkles out of garments.
If care isn’t taken, they can be very dangerous — even when they are operating as intended. But through several reports, a specific clothing steamer has been recalled from the shelves. If you have this model, stop using it immediately.
Here’s the backstory
Around 5.4 million units of the Joy/JM-branded My Little Steamer and My Little Steamer Go Mini have been recalled in the U.S. due to a severe risk of personal injury. A further 14,300 units were distributed to Canada.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) confirmed the recall by HSN, as 227 reports have been made. “HSN has received 227 reports of hot water spraying or leaking from the steamers, including 106 reports of burn injuries. These reports include eight reports of second-degree burns and six reports of third-degree burns,” read the recall notice.
Affected products were sold on the HSN.com website and the HSN television network. Several units were sold in stores across the country and online through the likes of Amazon and Target.
What you should do now
The most important thing is to stop using the device if you have one. The recall spans both sizes available: the standard (or deluxe) full-size My Little Steamer or the compact size My Little Steamer Go Mini. The models affected have either a flat or triangular steamer head.
If you have one of the recalled models, you are entitled to a full refund if you bought the unit from January 2018 to December 2020. You could claim a partial refund if you bought the unit between January 2015 to December 2017. If you bought your steamer before January 2015, you could claim a voucher.
You can submit your claim on the dedicated website that has been set up for the recall at https://www.steamerrecallsettlement.com. You can also call 1-855-654-0942 if you need more information.
A class-action lawsuit is also in progress, and the website states that the court will hold a final approval hearing on September 10. If you want to be included in the class-action suit, you have until August 4 to file your claim.
