Use AR to measure anything with your smartphone or tablet camera

man uses smartphone to measure

Have you ever needed to take a measurement but didn’t have a ruler or tape measure handy? Or the object was too big or too far away to measure by hand? With this clever app, you can measure nearly anything from small items inside your home to objects like buildings and more.

EasyMeasure lets you point your smartphone camera at an object and see the dimensions on the screen, as well as the distance of the object from you. It calculates based on the height of the camera and the tilt of the phone or tablet.

The only thing you have to do is set the correct camera height. EasyMeasure says that if you hold the phone at eye level, you can set the camera height to 4 inches fewer than your total height. So, if you’re 5 feet, 6 inches tall, you should set the height to 5’2″ (iOS) or 62″ (Android) – you might have to change the measurement units from centimeters to inches in the settings.

Of course, you also have to factor in whether or not you’re standing on anything. For example, if you’re standing on a box or step that’s 1-foot high and the object is on the ground, you need to set the camera height to 6′ 2″ or 74″.

On the Android version, this is a little easier to do as you can adjust the height on the main screen, and it’s fairly easy to guesstimate how high you’ve positioned the camera. However, the Android version is missing some of the extra icons in the Apple version.

Once you have the height, you move the measurement box on the screen to fit the object you’re measuring and you’re done. It takes a little practice, but soon you’ll be measuring everything around you very easily.

From what we can tell, the developer continues to update this 2017-release app; the most recent update was in March 2019. Both Apple and Android versions offer in-app purchases for ad-free experiences.
