The unveiling of Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop also introduced the brand new operating system that comes with it – a lightweight OS called Windows 10 S, aimed specifically at students and the education sector. Yes, you read that right, that’s Windows 10 with an S.

If you’re not familiar with it yet, it is a streamlined and locked-down version of Windows 10 Pro with a focus on consistent performance, reliability and security. Think of it as the Microsoft equivalent of Google’s Chrome OS, an optimized lightweight OS that can run efficiently even on low-powered machines.
Early on, Microsoft gave Surface Laptop owners the privilege of taking this brand new lightweight OS for a spin and just in case, it also gave them the opportunity to upgrade to a full version of Windows 10 Pro for free for a limited time.
Initially, the free Windows 10 Pro upgrade window was set just until the end of 2017. If you think that’s not enough time to fully explore Windows 10 S, well, Microsoft thinks so, too. It’s now extending the upgrade window to three more months.
So instead of the end of the year deadline, Surface Laptop owners now have until March 31, 2018, to take advantage of their free Windows 10 Pro upgrade. After that date, it will cost $49.
Why would anyone ditch Windows 10 S, anyway? For one, non-Windows Store applications cannot be downloaded nor installed and you can’t change your default browser to anything other than Microsft Edge. On the plus side, it has instant logins, fast boot times and better battery efficiency.
Additionally, if you’re a Surface Laptop owner and you’re having second thoughts about upgrading to Windows 10 Pro for good, you can always go back to Windows 10 S by downloading a recovery image. This is a good way to test drive both flavors of the Windows 10 operating system and see which one is right for you.
This is also great news overall for early adopters of the Surface Laptop who would rather have Windows 10 Pro’s flexibility rather than its efficiency and security. However, keep in mind that the Surface Laptop and Windows 10 S are optimized to work hand in hand – this conscious design is in line with Microsoft’s vision for the laptop as a perfect marriage between software and hardware.
