How to shoot great videos with your drone
Have you flown a drone? It’s so much fun to get one airborne and it’s pretty easy, too, if you practice.
However, there is a problem that almost everyone encounters when handling the remote control down on the ground. First, it’s tricky to keep your eyes on the drone and the controls at the same time.
Second, and more to the point, it can be extremely difficult to record a high-quality video. Sure, most of us can manage to get the drone off the ground and the video camera rolling.
But, yikes, the results can often be disappointing. You have probably recorded videos where the sunlight was bleaching out the entire scene you were trying to capture.
Of course, most drone videos are shaky, to the point you can feel seasick just watching the horizon bouncing up and down. There are a number of other common problems, like videos taken too high up, so you can’t really see what’s happening on the ground.
It’s so frustrating that you might have one of the many drones that are collecting dust in basements, attics and closets. Don’t let that happen to you.

Create a flight path
If you’re flying a drone to have some fun, just take the remote control and drone outside and hit the skies. It’s fun.
But if you’re taking a video of your sister’s wedding reception, the home you’re putting up for sale or your son’s football game, you need to plan ahead. One mistake too many people make is to start flying your drone and then, once airborne, scramble to figure out how to get the video camera going.
Here’s what to do, instead. Put together a flight, whether you write it down or talk it out.
You can scope out the area you want to capture and think about the ideal height to capture what’s going on at ground level. Take into consideration the battery life – most likely just a few minutes – and then map out each image you want to record.

Use the sun to your advantage
You take so many photos and videos these days – we all do! You just grab your smartphone, touch a button or two and you’ve captured every important moment of your day.
Together, we take billions of photos and videos every year. One lesson we’ve all learned about taking a great shot is to have the sun at your back.
It lights up the people and places you want to capture. Otherwise, if the sun is in your face, it’s bleaching out the camera and the images you’re trying to capture.
The same is true for a drone video. Make sure you’re flying the drone so the video camera is pointing away from the sun.
Bring Extra Hands
Take a tip from professional photographers and commercial drone operators. You want to have at least one other person with you.
It’s difficult to manage both a drone’s remote control and an airborne video camera. Then, you’re also trying to keep an eye on the drone, so you record a good video and so you don’t lose the drone!
Bring a family member or friend to watch where the drone is going. That leaves one fewer task for you.
Record from Ground Level
It’s complicated on its own to fly a drone and record a video, so don’t complicate things more than you have to. Instead of turning on the video camera once it’s in the air, ensure it’s recording at ground level – you’ll capture a cool video of your drone taking off.
Add Extra Storage
Your drone most likely has a limited amount of storage space, typically on a microSD card. Check yours.
Consider upgrading if you have less than 256GB of storage. You’ll capture more video and you won’t have to land as often to change SD cards.
