๐ How to scan a contract with your iPhone and have ChatGPT find the fine print

What’s new: ChatGPT’s camera menu now has a Scan option. You photograph page one, page two, page twelve, and it stitches them into a single searchable PDF sitting in your conversation. No saving, no exporting, no switching apps.
Scanner apps like PDF Maker and CamScan charge $30 and up a year for roughly this.
It even works for free accounts. iPhone only for now, nothing on Android or web yet, and it’s rolling out in waves. No Scan button? Update the app and check again in a few days.
โฑ๏ธ The 60-second setup
- Update ChatGPT in the App Store
- Open the camera inside a chat, tap the three-dot menu, choose Scan
- Photograph each page in order, then upload the combined PDF and paste the prompt below
๐ Try this prompt
List every auto-renewal clause, cancellation deadline, notice period and fee in this contract. For each one, give the page number, quote the exact sentence, and explain it in plain English. Then tell me the last date I can cancel without penalty.
๐ Then ask this follow-up
What in this contract would a careful lawyer push back on?
Also worth scanning: a signed lease, a three-page medical bill written entirely in billing codes, or the warranty booklet for the dishwasher you already broke.
โ ๏ธ The catch: Tiny print and blurry photos cause misreads, and a misread date is worse than no date. Flip to every page it cites and read the quoted sentence yourself before you act.
OpenAI says your uploads can be used to improve its models unless you turn that off, so go to Settings > Data Controls > switch off training data use before you scan medical bills or anything with your account numbers on it. And if your company says work documents stay off personal AI accounts, believe them.
Use the approved tool for the confidential stuff and save this for your own paperwork.
You get to be the person in the room who already knows the notice period is 60 days, not 30, because your phone read the whole thing while everyone else was still looking for a highlighter.
