If you want a decent car, you’ll likely need to take out a loan. Then there’s insurance on top of that. And if your vehicle breaks down after the warranty expires, you’re looking at thousands of dollars worth of expenses. Tap or click here for a great warranty alternative that could help you save big time.
Lastly, you have to worry about the cost of gas. Gas prices have been skyrocketing for a while, but very recently, they’ve taken a sharp turn upward. In fact, according to AAA, the national average for gas prices was $4.325 per gallon at the time of writing this.
With gas prices on the rise, comparison shopping is a must. Here’s how to find the cheapest gas near you.
Here’s the backstory
Gas prices in the U.S. have been rising for months. Typically we see spikes in the summertime. But conflicts worldwide that impact global supply chains also affect the costs of things we use daily, like fuel.
With the recent invasion of Ukraine, we can expect them to continue to rise. So it will come in handy as the months continue to know how to find the cheapest gas near you. Here are the best options.
GasBuddy
There is an app for everything, and of course, there would be one to find the lowest gas prices. Gas Buddy, available free for Android and iOS, is like Google Maps, but only for gas stations.
By entering your location, you’ll be able to see all the gas stations around you and how much they are charging. This allows you to pick the cheapest gas in your area.
The app also has a savings program that allows you to save as much as 25 cents a gallon. You can save by submitting your receipt to GasBuddy or signing up for its rewards program.
There is, of course, a downside to Gas Buddy, and that’s tracking. Much like Google Maps, your location data will be stored in the app. If you want to protect your privacy, best to choose another option.
Google Maps and Waze
We all need to use GPS occasionally to get from point A to point B, but did you know you can use Google Maps and Waze to check gas prices?
Google owns Waze and Google Maps, but Waze operates a little differently in that it sources its information from its users. On Waze, it’s easy to search for gas stations in your area.
The prices automatically pop up so you can pick and choose. It’s important to note that because users send in the information, it may not be the most up-to-date or accurate depending on when or who submitted the information.
However, you can filter the gas stations by price and distance so that you can make an informed choice based on the available information. Waze is available for free on iOS and Android.
With Google Maps, you can search for gas stations both in your area and along your route after putting directions into the app. The prices for each station will automatically pop up. Since Google compiles this information, it’s likely to be more accurate than Waze.
But remember, with Google, you always trade convenience for privacy since Google tracks and stores your data. Google Maps is free for iOS and Android.
Autoblog
If you aren’t a fan of apps or want to avoid being tracked, there is a handy blog that will do the same thing as GasBuddy and GoogleMaps. Autoblog allows you to search for the lowest gas prices based on your location.
Simply head to the website and type in your ZIP code. A listing of local gas stations and their prices will pop up.
