Apple releases its third iOS update in 2 weeks - here's why you need the latest version

Apple hasn’t been having the best time with its newly released iOS 13 software. On one hand, the update offers some seriously cool new features that improve the iPhone’s aesthetic and security. On the other hand, it seems to have broken several key features and added some security risks of its own.

That’s why Apple fast-tracked the release of iOS 13.1, which promised to fill some of the gaps and repair the damage from iOS 13. Although iOS 13.1 did manage to fix several of the bugs and security problems, some issues still managed to survive.

Breaking from last year’s precedent, Apple has released its third iOS update in two weeks: iOS 13.1.2. This update doesn’t add any new features, but it does fix some serious bugs that can cause critical components, like your camera and iCloud, to fail. Here’s what you need to know and how you can get this update as soon as possible.

Unlucky number 13

Apple’s most recent iOS update comes as the result of a release plagued with trouble since its launch date. When iOS 13 first became available for download, numerous users reported issues that rendered their phone insecure or unusable. Reports included crashing, glitches and a notorious issue that let anyone bypass the lock screen.

To combat the problems, iOS released version 13.1. This update repaired some of the more urgent issues, but some users still reported problems with backing up their phone, using their camera and shining the flashlight.

Though the ongoing issues didn’t make the iPhone completely unusable like some of the earlier iOS 13 glitches, it did serve as a huge disappointment. After all, what good is a phone that lauds its camera’s abilities only for it fail when you need it?

Apple’s quick release of iOS 13.1.2 proves, at the very least, that the company is monitoring user complaints and continues its attempts to right the wrong of its half-baked update.

How can I get iOS 13.1.2?

Updating to the latest edition of iOS is simple. All you need to do is open up Settings, scroll down to General, and select Software Update. You should see iOS 13.1.2 available immediately. Tap Download and Install to begin the update, but before you do, make sure you’ve backed up your phone and that you’re plugged into a power source.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to have installed iOS 13 or any of its previous versions to download the update. If, for some reason, you don’t see it, simply exit out of the Settings app and re-open to refresh the update. It should be visible after that quick fix.

With all the updates Apple has had to released in such a short time, it’s likely the company will be fine-tuning iOS 13 even further in the coming weeks. Make sure to turn Automatic Updates on, which can be found in the menu below the blue Download and Install button, to ensure your iPhone stays on top of the latest bug fixes and security patches.
