‘Kim, which battery brand is safest?’ Here’s the answer for your phone, your iPad and your laptop, with links and the 10-second label check that matters more than the brand.

“Hi, Kim, I love your YouTube channel. You mentioned battery fires recently on a show. I want a portable battery I can trust for my phone, my iPad and my laptop. I’m afraid of a fire while it charges next to my bed, or worse, on a plane. Yike! Which brand is safest?” — Drama Rama Julie in Washington, D.C., listening on WTOP 103.5 FM

Julie, first, you’re not being dramatic. There have been 56 battery smoke-and-fire incidents on U.S. flights this year. The brand is half of it.

🏷️ The 10-second label check

Flip any power bank over.

• The Wh number. That’s watt-hours, the real size. Under 100 Wh flies without asking. If it’s missing, back on the shelf.
• A safety mark. UL 2056 is the standard written specifically for power banks. It tests overcharging, short circuits, drops, crushing and overheating. Look for the UL or ETL logo on the case itself. No mark, no sale. 
• Then check the seller. On Amazon, the listing should say “Ships from Amazon” and “Sold by” the brand itself. That $9 brick from a seller named XQZTY is how a jump-starter ends up in a consumer safety warning with nobody to call.

🔋 Why not just buy Apple’s?

I get asked this a lot. Apple killed its MagSafe Battery Pack in 2023, and the only battery it sells today is a $99 pack that fits one phone, the iPhone Air. Nothing for an iPad, nothing for a MacBook. 

Apple would rather let Anker, Belkin and UGREEN fight over the battery. Those three publish their safety testing, put the UL mark on the case and answer the phone.

🔌 Three I’d buy, any brand of phone

1. For your phone: Belkin 10,000mAh 20W. Works on any iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel or Motorola with a USB-C port. The cable is built in, so nobody forgets the cord. About $25, 37 Wh. Want the magnetic kind that snaps on the back? The Anker MagGo 10K (about $80) sticks to any iPhone 12 or newer and the Pixel 10. Samsung skipped the magnets. If that’s you, stick with the Belkin.
2. For your tablet: UGREEN Nexode 20,000mAh 145W. Built-in USB-C cable, 72 Wh, charges an iPad, a Galaxy Tab or a Surface, and has enough juice (100W) to run a small laptop in a pinch. Around $65 on sale.
3. For your laptop: Anker Prime 27,650mAh 250W. Two USB-C ports, 99.5 Wh, the biggest you can carry onto a plane without asking. About $180. Works with any laptop that charges over USB-C. (If your laptop still uses a round barrel plug, no power bank on Earth will feed it. Buy the wall charger and call it a day.)

Now, your two fears. 

The nightstand: Charge on a hard surface, never under a pillow or on the comforter, and unplug it when it hits full. 

The plane: It rides in your carry-on, never checked, and you charge it in your lap or the seat pocket. Where you can see it is where you can stop it. If a bank ever puffs up, runs hot or takes a hard drop, it retires to the battery drop-off, not the trash.

I got angry when my phone battery died. My therapist suggested I find an outlet.
