A bot is ruining Wordle – Here’s how to avoid spoilers
The word guessing game Wordle has taken the world by storm over the last few weeks. Millions of users are trying to guess the daily word. Naturally, several fakes have made their way onto app stores.
The most significant appeal for many players is sharing results on social media. It’s a fun way to show off your vocabulary while keeping the answer a secret.
There are tips and tricks to beating the game, but a Twitter account has taken that to a whole new level. Read on to see how this social media bot is ruining the fun.
Here’s the backstory
Coming up with the correct five-letter word is more challenging than it seems. Some users have spent hours piecing together clues while the answer is in front of them. But there’s always someone determined to spoil the fun for everyone.
Wordle’s website is rudimentary, so a crafty software engineer figured out how to see the answers. According to the engineer, not only did the reverse-engineering trick reveal the solution for a specific day’s word, but all future answers.
But what do you do if you have all the answers to the hottest test on the internet? You create a Twitter account to reveal the answers. Going by the handle of The Wordlinator, it automatically replies with the next day’s solution to users who post their daily guess attempts.
It’s not precisely clear who set up the bot account, but it seems they are getting tired of all the word-related tweets. As the profile explains, its goal is to “terminate Wordle bragging.” In response to other Wordle shares, it accuses the posters of “spoiling Twitter for everyone.”
What you can do about it
If you have managed to steer clear of The Wordlinator, count yourself lucky. Those who have been unfortunate enough to have their future Wordle games ruined can also breathe a sigh of relief.
Twitter has suspended the spoiler account, revoking tweeting privileges. However, that might not be a permanent solution, as account variations keep popping up. So here are a few things that you can do to make sure your Wordle is safe:
- Report any accounts that reveal Wordle solutions. This will automatically block the account from your feed and alert Twitter that something is amiss.
- If you come across a spoiler account, block them immediately. You won’t see future tweets from the account.
- In Twitter, you can also set who can reply to your tweets. For example, when composing a tweet, click on the “Everyone can reply” option and change it to “People you follow” or “Only people you mention.”
