What is Waze?
Waze is a navigation app and Google subsidiary. It is used to help people get from point A to point B, and now it is adding some nifty new features that enables users to report any un-plowed or inaccessible roads during snowstorms to other users who have the app.
When you’re preparing to hit the road, you can add the blocked routes to your map and avoid them on your way to your destination.
Waze also provides warnings for hazards, speed traps and traffic, which can make your daily commute a lot easier. Now it also reveals real-time snow conditions to help ensure your safety.
This update was created after the company received a strong recommendation from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to include a reporting option. The feature was made possible by the municipal agency, through its “Waze for Cities Data” partnership and data sharing program.
If you use Waze, you can report road hazards by tapping the Hazards section, then Weather. The app always provides live information and is available in 185 countries.
In Virginia, Waze will be providing data to the VDOT from its crowd-sourced snow condition data gathering, which will be used in conjunction with their own snow clearance sources.
