$100 for a tank of gas? Top 10 most expensive vehicles at the pump

Gas prices have been hitting record highs, and it’s getting more difficult to justify a leisurely drive to nowhere.

People have been turning to or considering alternative fuel vehicles to reduce the impact of the climbing cost of gas. Electric cars don’t need gas to operate, so it should be cheaper to own one, right? Not exactly. Tap or click here for our report on the cost of ownership for an EV.

Depending on what you drive, you could spend far more or less on fuel than the average motorist. Let’s look at the vehicles that’ll cost you the most at the pump.

Bigger is not always better

Consumer Reports tested a wide range of vehicles and how much it costs to fill them up. The top 10 priciest vehicles were all full-sized SUVs or pickup trucks that cost more than $100 to fill from empty.

These large vehicles are thirsty, averaging just 14 to 17 MPG. Plus, they have enormous fuel tanks that hold up to 28 gallons. That’s a recipe for a large bill at the pump.

  • Weight is your enemy. Remove anything you’re not using from your vehicle.
  • Rooftop cargo increases drag, which decreases fuel economy.
  • Whenever you park your car and let the engine cool, it will need more energy to start and warm up again. Plan your trips and errands to combine multiple stops to keep your engine warm and running more efficiently.
