Amazon Prime is an extremely successful program offered by the online retail giant. It’s estimated that nearly 80 million people in the U.S. are members.
Walmart began competing with Amazon head-on when it announced free two-day shipping on all orders over $35 back in February. The competition between the two retail giants is about to heat up. Amazon just announced a counter move to try and attract Walmart customers.
How Amazon is trying to reel in Walmart customers
Free two-day shipping is probably the biggest draw when it comes to Amazon Prime. But there is so much more to love!

Now, Amazon is making it easier for low-income shoppers to become members of Prime. People who receive government assistance can become a pay-by-month Prime member at a deeply discounted rate.
Low-income shoppers can join Amazon Prime for $5.99 per month. The regular pay-by-month price is $10.99.
To qualify for the discounted rate the consumer must have a valid Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. These are used for government assistance programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP) and Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Program (WIC). Note: EBT cards cannot be used to pay for the Prime membership.
Amazon said in a press release, “We know when people try Prime they love it, because they save time and money with low prices on millions of items, unlimited access to premium videos and music, and fast, convenient delivery. We designed this membership option for customers receiving government assistance to make our everyday selection and savings more accessible, including the many conveniences and entertainment benefits of Prime.”

The move is considered an attempt to take low-income shoppers away from Walmart. Since Walmart started offering free shipping on online orders it has received a huge jump in online sales. Walmart reported in May a 63 percent increase in e-commerce sales over its most recent fiscal quarter.
