Words with Friends and other free games now available in Facebook Messenger – here’s how to play

Last November, Facebook added 17 classic games to the Messenger app. Users were able to challenge their friends to beat their high score in “Pac-Man” or go back and forth in a game of “Words With Friends.”

At first, the games were only available in 30 countries. But that’s about to change. According to Facebook, 1.2 billion people use Messenger every month and Instant Games on Messenger will soon be available for everyone around the world.

Over the next few weeks, people will be able to play up to 50 games through the Messenger app and more games will be added almost every week. The games will be available for both Android and Apple users.

Note: Watch out for phishing scams on Messenger. Read this article to learn how to protect your accounts.

Facebook said the games will be better too and will include more features, such as the ability for players to take turns built into the format. “Words With Friends” is one of the first games to incorporate this feature. “EverWing” will use Gamebots that can engage with solo players. Another improvement will be the addition of tournaments and leaderboards.

To access the games, open the Messenger app on your phone and then open a chat window with a friend you’d like to challenge. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see a row of icons next to the box where you type messages. Click the blue plus sign for more options and then click the purple gaming console icon. You’ll see a list of available games pop up; just click “PLAY” next to your selection!
