One of my favorite summer things is having huge get-togethers and barbecues. I love cooking great meals for everyone to enjoy.
Of course, this takes a lot of planning. First you need to decide what items are going to be on the menu. Then it’s time to head to the grocery store to pick up anything that you don’t already have on hand.
Finally, the big day comes and it’s time to prepare the feast. But, oh no, one of your essential ingredients that you had in the fridge has gone bad. Now you’re in panic mode, scrambling to make it back to the store in time to replace the spoiled food. Good news…there’s new tech on the way that could prevent these sticky situations from ever happening again.
We’re getting spoiled (see what we did there)
What we’re talking about is a Kickstarter campaign that recently began. The folks behind the campaign are looking to manufacture “smarterware.” It would be the world’s first smart food storage system.
Ovie Smarterware would help eliminate the age-old dilemma of forgetting about food until it spoils. To make things even easier, the smarterware will be connected to Amazon’s Alexa. That way you can have your virtual assistant give you a hand in the kitchen.
Here’s how it will work: You press a button, tag food with your voice, and Ovie will handle the rest. The reminders live in your fridge, so you never have to pull out your phone to tag food or find out how long it’s been lingering in the fridge.
Just tell Alexa what food is in your container, for example spinach, and an appropriate countdown timer will begin. You’ll get reminders on your smartphone, smart speaker, and a SmartTag light on your container.
The light goes from green to yellow to red as your food sits in the fridge. When it gets to yellow, you’ll get a notification that delivers suggestions on how to use the food. If the SmartTag turns red, it’s time to toss the food.
How cool is that? Currently, Ovie works with Amazon Alexa but there are plans for it to eventually be compatible with all smart home speakers.
