What color are these strawberries? The answer will surprise you

Look at the picture above. What color are those strawberries? To a lot of people, they look red. If you see red then I’ve got news for you – your eyes are playing tricks on you!

Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a professor of psychology at a university in Japan, posted the original photo on his Twitter account. His account is full of optical illusions but this one is getting more attention than the others. He said that although the strawberries appear to be reddish, there are actually no red pixels in the image.

Kitaoka manipulated the gamma levels in the photo and that created a greenish/blueish image. But our brains have their own “auto white balance” setting. In photography, this setting compensates for lights of different hues to make the colors of objects appear true. When we look at the picture above, our brain “color corrects” the photo to compensate for the blueish tint.

When Matt Lieberman shared the photo on his account, it really picked up momentum. It has nearly 11,000 retweets and nearly 22,000 likes.

Several people responded to his post with proof the photo does not include any red pixels. If you look at the photo that Tim Hutton posted, then the illusion becomes more clear.

To set the record straight once and for all, Kitaoka posted the unaltered version of the image. He says it’s a strawberry cake his wife made. With the correct colors, I think the cake looks pretty tasty.
