Online supplements and meds are contaminated with dangerous bacteria

When it comes to taking any medication or liquid supplement, you need to proceed with caution. Even with a doctor’s prescription, you still want to make sure you’re taking the right dosage and that the medical term for the product matches up.

Even with taking these precautions, you could still be getting contaminated liquid supplements or medicine. There’s nothing you can do but hope the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is on top of things and issues a warning when that happens.

Liquid Supplement Recall

In fact, that’s what the FDA just did with Pharmatech. You’re being urged to not use any liquid supplements or medicines made by the company including products for babies and small children.

The products by Pharmatech are distributed under many brand names including Rugby, Major, and Leader. Any product produced by these brands could be contaminated with potentially dangerous bacteria.

While the FDA recall only applies to select products, you’re being warned against using any liquid products Pharmatech makes.

What are the products?

You mainly have to be concerned with products labeled as stool softeners and laxatives under the Colace and Dulcolax brands. The FDA received reports of users getting an infection with Burkholderia cepacia, a form of bacteria that are usually antibiotic-resistant. These bacteria are potentially linked to a liquid version of stool softener docusate sodium used in these brands.

The official recall includes the following products:

Leader Brand

• Liquid Multivitamin Supplement for Infants and Toddlers: 50 mL
• Liquid Vitamin D Supplement for Breastfed Infants 400 IU: 50 mL

• D3 400iu Liquid: 50ML
• Poly-Vitamin Liquid: 50ML

In addition to being antibiotic-resistant, Burkholderia cepacia is composed of at least 20 different species and most often cause pneumonia in people with compromised immune systems or lung disease. People with cystic fibrosis especially need to be cautious.

What to do

In addition to not using any of these products, if you have any of these medications at home, contact the distributor or pharmacy where you bought them and ask for a refund.

If you have any questions, call 800-645-2158 for Rugby Laboratories and Major Pharmaceuticals products and 800-200-6313 for products made by the Leader Brand.
