Volvo’s first electric car will cost less than $40,000

Have you been paying attention to all of the great technology making its way into cars lately? Some handy innovations include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which allow you to focus on the road while still using your gadgets’ functions in a hands-free way. You can even get unlimited data plans right in your car now.

More substantial inventions include electric and self-driving vehicles. You might have the impression that this technology is too expensive to consider buying. Volvo is trying to change your mind.

What does Volvo have in the works?

CEO Lex Kerssemakers said that Volvo will have an all-electric vehicle (EV) debut in 2019. The important part of the announcement wasn’t the car’s release date, but its details.

Kerssemakers said that he expects the EV to cost between $35,000 and $40,000. Volvos have a strong reputation for quality and safety and its traditional engine vehicles are priced in this range. So it’s a little surprising that an all-electric Volvo will also be affordable.

Affordable pricing wasn’t the only great detail he announced. The EV is also expected to have a driving range of at least 250 miles between charges. This means you could actually use the vehicle for more than just commuting to work and back.

Speaking of the car’s details to Automotive News, Kerssemakers said, “That’s what I put in as the prerequisite for the United States. If I want to make a point in the U.S., if I want to make volumes, that’s what I need.”
