Carmakers have been enticing us with new technology for quite some time now. Infotainment systems, built-in Wi-Fi, the integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, just to name a few innovations that reel us in.
Those features have been developed fairly recently. But one car manufacturer is turning to centuries old tech to try and make its vehicles safer and more desirable.
How Nissan is using old tech for safety purposes
Distracted driving is one of the biggest safety issues confronting motorists today. It’s estimated that distracted driving contributes to 16 percent of all fatal crashes in the U.S., causing nearly 5,000 deaths each year.
One of the biggest distractions for drivers these days, you probably guessed it, is the smartphone. You’ve probably witnessed this phenomenon yourself. Someone driving near you is swerving all over the road and you look inside their car and they’re texting. I know this scenario makes me irate when it happens.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety did a study on distracted driving and found some interesting results. Teen drivers say they are compelled to check their phone whenever they receive a text or call, even while driving. Also, over 50 percent of the teens questioned said they believe it’s safe for them to text while driving. Yikes!
Now, Nissan is trying to help solve this problem. The company is using technology created by Sir Michael Faraday in the 19th century to do it.
What we’re talking about is a smartphone signal-blocker. It’s designed to stop the use of smartphones while driving and cut back on distracted driving incidents.
The Signal Shield being designed by Nissan will help with this issue. It’s a compartment within the vehicle’s armrest that blocks the driver’s phone signal while the phone is inside it with the lid closed.
Watch the following video to see the signal blocker in use in a Nissan Juke:
This is a great idea that could really help cut back on crashes caused by distracted driving. However, if you’re not in the market for a new car or you’re not a Nissan fan, there’s good news.
There is already a smartphone shield on the market that you can use to block your phone’s signal. Even better, it’s portable and will fit in your vehicle’s armrest.
There is a smartphone shield available in Kim’s Shop for under $50.
Not only will this smartphone shield help cut down on distracted driving incidents but it can also protect your sensitive information from hackers. Here are some features:
- RFID protection to shield your credit cards, passports and more from card readers. It prevents hackers and criminals from accessing your personal information.
- Stops calls, texts or emails while the phone is stored in the pocket but allows your messages and texts to download once removed from the case. You’ll never miss a message and no more interruptions at just the wrong moment!
- There are two storage pockets for your credit cards, ID and cash. Simply make sure the clasp is securely fastened for complete signal blocking.
