Kim’s Take: 8K televisions are on the way but the price isn’t worth it

In a hurry? Tap or click to listen to this story in less than a minute!

Doesn’t it feel like every time you buy a television, it’s outdated by the time you get home? First, 1080p became passe. Then, 4K has just arrived. Now the new 8K TVs are shipping.

Spoiler Alert. You can’t afford it.

Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and LG were making a big deal about their 8K TVs last month at the annual consumer electronics show. One thing they were all silent about was the price and now we know why.

Bonus: Now you can own an 8K TV even though there are no 8K TV shows

Samsung’s 85-inch 8K model costs a lot more than 8K. Be ready to drop 15 grand. A 65-inch sets you back about $5,000. If you decide to get one, be aware there’s hardly any 8K content available so you’ll have to settle for upscaling.

I say wait. After all, Samsung’s 98-inch 8K TV is coming at some point this year. Better start saving for that one now.
