As smartphones become more sophisticated they have also become more expensive. But according to a new report from Pew Research Center for Internet & Technology, the price hasn't deterred the 85% of Americans who own smartphones.

If there is anything Americans love more than their smartphones it's shopping for bargains. If you don't need the latest phone, you can find bargain-basement prices on older, but still perfectly capable, smartphones. If you really pay attention, you can find some nice discounts on the latest smartphones, depending on your carrier or where you bought your phone.

Here are some great smartphones that cover both ends of the bargain shopping spectrum. You may find exactly what you're looking for.

1. Consider it found money

If your mobile carrier is Verizon or AT&T, Walmart is offering $100 off the new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. The offer is valid through Nov. 21 and only applies to purchases made through an installment plan. Still, it's a great offer on the iPhone 11, which already costs hundreds of dollars less than its two sister products. Saving a bit on the pricier iPhone 11 Pro is always welcomed.

Apple's newest line of iPhones is getting a thumbs-up for its long battery life, and the iPhone 11 is no exception. Also, the iPhone 11 now features two cameras in the back. Working in tandem, the dual-lens, wide-angle camera performs better than ever in low-light settings. Most notably, the wide-angle lens allows users to zoom out beyond the ordinary restrictions of what the iPhone's camera could previously handle.

You can buy the iPhone 11 here and the iPhone 11 Pro here.

2. Look at lease-to-buy

As you look through the iPhone 11 line, you'll see that the prices get steeper. The iPhone 11 Pro retails starting at about $1,000. If you can't afford to buy it outright, Sprint offers two leasing options. With the first, if you have a trade-in you pay $12.50 a month over 18 months and the phone is all yours. If you don't have a trade-in, you pay $41.67 a month for 18 months.

The iPhone 11 Pro models offer a triple-lens camera that uses brand new artificial intelligence software to processes images. The program combines multiple exposures and resolutions together to bring textures and details to light like never before. Another big selling point  — longer battery life. To lease an iPhone 11 Pro start here.

3. Half is better than nothing

OK, the iPhone XR isn't the belle of the smartphone ball anymore, but it's only a year old. The XR is also the most affordable of iPhone's X line. And now it costs even less.

Verizon is offering a special online deal that will slice off $— or half of the total retail cost. To get the savings, place any iPhone XR with monthly device payments, or at full retail price, into your cart and add the phone as a new smartphone line to your account. You'll get your $300 credited to your account over 24 months.

The XR is affordable because it went with a less expensive aluminum body and an LCD display. However, it does come with Face ID, Apple's A12 processor and the best battery life prior to the iPhone 11 line. Not bad for a steal of a price. Buy your iPhone XR here.

4. More is less

Unless you run a major corporation, many of us don't buy our smartphones in bulk. But Verizon is offering a tempting online-only deal on a number of Samsung Android smartphones. You can buy from a variety of models and get another one at half price.

Place any two Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e, S10 5G, Note10+ 5G, Note10+ or Note10 phones with monthly device payments into your cart. Then add one of these phones as a new smartphone line on any Unlimited plan to your account. Over the next 24 months, your account will be credited $750. Some of these phones run as high at $1,300 so you're not getting chump change. Get in on the deal here.

5. Don't fence me in

Prepaid phones are always a great bargain. Just look at the iPhone 6s Plus Walmart is offering.

If you don't know what a prepaid phone is, the best way to explain it is that you are not tied to a long-term contract. You buy a monthly plan (which is available at Walmart and at some major phone carriers) with a set number of minutes and data.

If you run out, you can buy another plan right away or wait until you have more funds. These are great if you have chatty teens or on a budget and can't pay for a long-term contract every month.

Yes, the iPhone 6s Plus launched in the Stone Age known as 2016, but its popularity has endured to the point that Apple still supports it. For example, a design flaw has emerged in the iPhone 6S that prevents the phone from powering on. Apple has announced that it's extending repairs to iPhone 6S owners at no charge. That will make a lot of people happy and even more who would like to buy this almost $200 phone here.

6. Who needs a lock?

For about $170, you can buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy A20 from Walmart. Because it is unlocked, you can go to almost any major carrier and buy a SIM card you can slip into the phone. Also, you don't have to stick to one carrier.

Even better news: because a phone is unlocked, its resale value is higher; however, an unlocked phone does have its limitations depending on the network you're using. For example, Wi-Fi calling or HD voice may not be available, and the carrier won't guarantee that the voice or data network will work perfectly on your phone. That's the price you pay for being a lone wolf.

The Samsung Galaxy A20 has a 6.4 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, with 32 GB of memory, 3GB of RAM and a slot for a microSD where you can add up to 512 GB. Buy the Samsung Galaxy A20 from Walmart here.
