It's late at night and your weekly pub crawl with friends was a rousing success. To unwind for the evening, you spend some time browsing Amazon. When you get your next credit card statement, you gasp in horror at the numbers. Drunk shopping: We've all been there. With all the great deals on Prime, it can be hard to resist temptation.

As it turns out, you aren't alone when it comes to drunk shopping. For the internet's busiest retailer, drunk buyers have proven to be a multibillion-dollar industry. Items ranging from candy to cat clothing have all been found in the carts of inebriated shoppers.

What is it, then, that prompts people to go shopping online after a drink? What do you need to steer clear of to avoid this fate? The answers are both insightful and hilarious.

Who goes drunk shopping online the most?

In a survey performed by The Hustle, drunk shopping habits between men and women are close, with 80% of surveyed women admitted to having made a drunken purchase, compared to 78% of men.

The largest demographic to make drunk purchases, however, were millennials, closely followed by gen-xers with boomers trailing further behind. This may be due to internet habits more than anything, so it might be wise to keep an eye on your kids or grandkids when they come home from a night of partying.

What do people buy when drunk shopping?

Unsurprisingly, the answer is clothing, making up a whopping 66% of drunk purchases made by surveyed adults. Amazon deals aren't the only driving force behind this trend, however. Many of the purchases made when drunk shopping are bizarre and spur-of-the-moment, such as shelling out cash for the same life jacket as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future movies.

I'm not saying it's not a cool look, but 2015 was 4 years ago and Marty's probably back home by now.

How much do people spend when drunk shopping?

This part might be painful to read. On average, surveyed adults claimed to spend around $444 a year on drunk purchases. That's an entire car payment spent on late night flash sales and Prime deals!

Surprisingly, the demographic that shops intoxicated the least actually spends, on average, more than any of the other demographic groups. Baby boomers, on average, spend around $538 a year on drunk purchases. While the kids may do it more often, it seems that drunken boomers may have more expensive shopping tastes than other cohorts.

So, if you're thinking you'd like to have an extra $500 in your wallet at the end of the year, it might be a good idea to put the margarita down before getting on Amazon Prime.

One big mistake you’re making with your Amazon account

Isn't it great that when you buy something from Amazon, you open the app or website and lo-and-behold you're still signed in from the last time. Convenient, yes, but it's also risky. Anyone who gets hold of your device can buy stuff from your account. Here's what to do about it. Tap or click to find out what you need to do.
