Broccoli and ice cream seems like an unlikely pairing. But that may not sound as strange as a bird and a smart speaker.
Truth can be stranger than fiction, and in this case, a parrot has fallen in love with his owner's Amazon Echo smart speaker. And boy, does he like to shop!
Meet Rocco. And while his owner's away, this parrot will play.
A digital companion during the day
Remember what I said about broccoli and ice cream? Those are two things Rocco has ordered through Alexa while his owner isn't home. He also demands strawberries, watermelon and raisins.
"Rocco and Alexa chat away to each other all day," his owner, Marion Wischnewski of the Berkshire, U.K.-based National Animal Welfare Trust, told The Sun. "Then I have to check the shopping list and cancel all the items he’s ordered."
The African Grey has also ordered household items like light bulbs, a kettle and a kite. Sounds practical, right?
That's my jam
When Rocco's not shopping, he likes to dance to his favorite music. Alexa helps him with that, too.
Although he seems to prefer rock, he doesn't seem to mind the slow numbers.
"Often I come home from being out all day and find romantic music playing," Marion explained. “And he loves a boogie with Alexa. But it has to be something fast, like his favorite, Kings of Leon."
Rocco was previously a rescue parrot at the animal welfare center. Marion decided to take him home because his previous owner taught him swear words, something the staff didn't want on public display. That arrangement seems to have worked out just fine.
And did you know Alexa can now predict what you'll do next? Listen to Kim discuss the feature in this episode of Consumer Tech Update.
