A new, quicker way to open documents debuts

A new, quicker way to open documents debuts

Did you know Google provides a suite of free software that anyone can use from their browser? Google’s suite of online software like Documents and Sheets changed the way we work, providing business-class word processing, presentations and more without requiring installation or carrying files around with you.

Now Google provides a cool new trick to create documents, websites, presentations and more using the .new domain.

Back in 2014, Google registered a bunch of generic URLs with the extension .new. This came after an explosion in top level domains that took us from .com, .net, and .org to .pizza and .co and hundreds more. Big companies like Google buy up tons of domain names every year for upcoming projects, internal purposes, and to protect their intellectual property, so that didn’t raise too many eyebrows.

However, now it's announced a very cool new hack pairing those domains with the Google Suite of applications for documents, websites, forms, and more.

To get started, you'll want a Google account. If you have an Android phone or a Gmail account, you already have everything you need. If not, just go to accounts.google.com to create your account. Once you’re signed in, everything works seamlessly.

Google Docs

Google Docs is Google’s riff on word processing. Think of it like Microsoft Word, but accessible anywhere.

To start Google Docs using the .new extension:

  • Type: doc.new, docs.new, or documents.new in your browser’s address bar.
  • Hit the Return key

You’ll be taken right into your new Google Doc, where you can write a paper, a memo, a letter, or whatever your word processing needs are. Google saves it right in your Google Drive and you can always return to it later, though you do want to give it a recognizable file name.

Google Forms

Google Forms is a quick way to run surveys, quizzes, or put together web forms for things like job applications, membership signups, or event registration. You don’t need to know fancy coding or have a dedicated site.

All you need to do is:

  • Type: form.new or forms.new in your browser’s address bar
  • Hit the Return key

You’ll be taken to your new Form right away. You can add questions, poll options, and otherwise set it up to your liking, then easily share a link out to customers, eventgoers, or whomever needs to sign up, give their opinion, or provide information.

Google Sheets

Google Sheets is a spreadsheet program for accounting or keeping track of information. It’s like Microsoft Excel, but a little easier to access on the go and great for a small business or just a home organization project.

To start a new Google Sheet using the .new extension

  • Type sheet.new, sheets.new, or spreadsheet.new in your browser’s address bar.
  • Hit the Return key

You’ll be taken right into your new spreadsheet.

Google automatically saves everything to your Google Drive, but it’s best to give the file a memorable name right away so you can find it again.

Google Sites

Google Sites is a great way to put together a quick webpage for yourself, your family, or your business. You don’t need to know any coding, find hosting, or worry about domain names. To get started, all you need to do is:

  • Type: site.new, sites.new, or website.new in your browser's address bar
  • Hit the Return key

You can start working right in the editor adding graphics, text, and more. Once you’re done, hit Publish and Google will make the site live without a ton of work on your part.

Google Slides

Google Slides is a lot like Microsoft Powerpoint. If you need to put together a presentation or slide show, you can do it from the comfort of your browser. To get started:

  • Type: slide.new, slides.new, deck.new, or presentation.new in the address bar of your browser
  • Hit the Return key

From there, you can start working on your new slideshow or presentation right away. It’s accessible from anywhere with an internet connection and the file saves right to your Google Drive, so you always have it handy.
