For the most part iOS 12 has been met with good reviews, as its new features and increased speed have made the mobile Apple experience better. That's not to say it is perfect, just that as far as OS updates go, this one earns a thumbs up.

Indeed, the performance got a nice bump, the augmented reality experience was upgraded and photos, along with Siri and CarPlay, are better now than they were before. That's not all, of course, and you can read more about the improvements here.

That's not to say everything is rosy with iOS 12, as the more people have had a chance to play with it the more they have found they don't like. In fact, one of the problems within is actually quite serious.

It's not the only issue that could arise

As long as technology exists, there will be those who seek to hack into it, and no doubt smart devices are a prime target. Fortunately, the one that was discovered with iOS 12, which allows someone to get unrestricted access to photos and contacts in a locked iPhone, was found by a security researcher.

Jose Rodriguez is the one who figured it out, and he posted a video on YouTube explaining his process.

If you've had time to watch the video, you understand it's a process that requires plenty of steps and, in reality, is not likely something many people will try to attempt. But if they do, then someone will be able to access a phone's contacts or photos even if it was locked.

As unlikely as it may be to happen, it's still the type of thing we'd rather not have to worry about. Fortunately, there are things that we can do to ensure our phones are safe, and the steps are neither difficult to follow nor numerous.

Protect your phone

If you have an iPhone X or newer, simply turning on Face ID will do the trick. You have the option to do that when first setting up the phone, but if you left it off and want it on now, follow these steps:

  1. Tap on "Settings"
  2. Scroll down until you see "Face ID & Passcodes"
  3. Tap to activate it, then go through the process of looking straight into the phone and placing your face inside the frame
  4. When the scan is complete, tap on "Continue"
  5. Go through the process again, placing your head inside the circle for a second time
  6. When Face ID setup is complete, tap "Done"

Of course, iOS 12 is available for phones that are older than the iPhone X and do not have Face ID. If you fall into that group, your steps are:

  1. Tap on "Settings"
  2. Scroll down until you see "Touch ID & Passcodes"
  3. Enter your phone's passcode
  4. Scroll down until you find the "Allow access when locked" section
  5. Find "Siri" and switch it to off

10 things you can do in iOS 12 that you couldn't before

The new features in iOS 12 cover a lot of different angles. They will help you get a handle on your screen use, make Siri more useful, and keep you in touch with more people than ever before. Tap or click here to learn more about what it has to offer.
