Groundbreaking tablet rolls up like a scroll

Groundbreaking tablet rolls up like a scroll

We've seen some amazing new technology hit the market over the past few decades. Smartphones, home virtual assistants, and robots that vacuum our homes, just to name a few.

The floodgates to more groundbreaking designs are open for business. It's exciting to learn about things on the way.

Sometimes the new product is just a tweak of another. But it can be a major improvement to the original. That's exactly what's happening with a new tablet that you could potentially carry around in your pocket.

Amazing tablet rolls up and is totally portable

Researchers at Queen's University's Human Media Lab have designed a prototype tablet/smartphone that has a bendable screen. It's able to roll up -- think of a tiny roll of paper towels -- and fit into your pocket.

It's being called the "MagicScroll." The gadget has a high-resolution 7.5-inch flexible touch-screen display that is housed in a casing that was made by a 3D printer. There are two rotary wheels, one on each end, that allow you to scroll through information on the screen. Check out the following video for a quick demonstration:

While scrolling, if you find something that you want to zoom in on just unroll the display and it functions as a tablet. It's really lightweight too, making it super easy to hold with one hand. Oh yeah,  plus it can be used as a phone. So that's pretty cool!

One of the inventors said, "We were inspired by the design of ancient scrolls because their form allows for a more natural, uninterrupted experience of long visual timelines. Another source of inspiration was the old rolodex filing systems that were used to store and browse contact cards. The MagicScroll's scroll wheel allows for infinite scroll action for quick browsing through long lists.

"Unfolding the scroll is a tangible experience that gives a full screen view of the selected item. Picture browsing through your Instagram timeline, messages or LinkedIn contacts this way!"

The device even has a camera that makes it a gesture-based control gadget similar to Nintendo's "Wiimote." As we said, it's currently a prototype but should be available soon. There's always something cool to look forward to.
