Consuming mobile data abroad can be an expensive affair. Remember the dad who got the shock of his life when his kid streamed YouTube videos while in Canada and he was hit with a $17,000 bill?
Unless you are able to connect to Wi-Fi, using your smartphone or tablet outside of the United States may be out of the question while on vacation or a business trip.
Well, T-Mobile already has a generous free data roaming plan but the "Un-carrier" just made it even better!
Read on and learn more about this big change that will definitely be a big boost for travelers.
Now covers nearly the entire globe
T-Mobile recently expanded Simple Global, its free roaming service, to a total number of 210 countries for no extra charge.
T-Mobile customers already had great roaming perks (unlimited data and texting in over 140 countries) but this expanded coverage puts it over the top.
Not sure if you are covered? Don't worry, Simple Global is automatically included with all T-Mobile ONE plans.
“More than one in three families planning vacations this year intend to travel internationally, and Verizon and AT&T want you to pay twice as much every day when you travel abroad – it’s ridiculous!” said John Legere, T-Mobile's CEO.
“With T-Mobile ONE, you just take your phone with you – turn it on as usual and it works – no worrying over your wireless bill, just enjoy your family time and see the sights!”
There's this one caveat with Simple Global, though - data speeds while abroad will be limited to 2G speeds (128kbps) only. While this is still usable, it's much, much slower than the LTE speeds that you're used to.
If you do want decent speeds, then you'll have to shell out $5 a day for T-Mobile's "daily data pass." This will allow you 512MB of up to 4G LTE speeds in all Simple Global countries.
This daily data pass will be available to purchase via the T-Mobile app starting on August 1.
Still, T-Mobile's Simple Global perk is infinitely better than the other competing carriers who still charge pay-as-you-go roaming rates. We're hoping that the other major carriers will start offering something comparable.
