These days, whenever anyone needs to buy something oftentimes the first place they look is online. With sites like Amazon, products are quite easy to find, and generally are listed for a good price.

As far as downsides go, delay in actually getting the item, porch thiefs, it arriving broken or just a desire to return it are generally what people think of. Shipping costs can also be an issue for some, but even with them it's still usually a better price than if you were to buy from a store.

But sometimes it's not. Or, at least, it's possible that the shipping cost will be so ridiculous that you would not even think about buying the item.

As pricey as that may be, it probably wasn't this expensive

A Georgia woman, Barbara Carroll, was tasked with purchasing toilet paper as part of her job as a building manager. Just as many of us would do, she went to Amazon to try and find the best deal possible.

She ordered three boxes and, a few days after the package was delivered, checked her bank statement only to see a charge for the order that surpassed $7,000.

Carroll said the order broke down as $88.17 for the toilet paper, with shipping charges of more than $7,400.

How did this happen?

Stories like this don't come about very often, but it's important to know this wasn't actually Amazon's fault. The toilet paper was bought from a third-party seller, of which there are many on Amazon.

They are not directly affiliated with Amazon and therefore are more loosely regulated, but that is not to say there are no rules. One of them is about adding costs to purchases after they have been made.

"Any attempt to increase the sale price of a product after a transaction has been completed is prohibited," they write. "Additionally, sellers cannot set excessive order fulfillment and shipping costs."

What happened to Carroll violates that policy, which is why Amazon provided a full refund for the order and has taken action against the seller.

Don't let this happen to you

While Carroll has to be relieved to get a full refund, having to go through this ordeal is probably not going to be high on her list of favorite moments. The key to making sure this doesn't happen to you is to be mindful of who you are buying your goods from.

Remember, just because it is on Amazon does not mean it is being sold by Amazon, so it is imperative you look into the seller before clicking to buy. Utilize customer reviews and ratings, getting as much information as you can to ensure this -- or some other shady issue -- does not pop up.

But as always if there is an issue with your order, contact Amazon's customer service to see if you can get the situation resolved.
