Forget Laurel or Yanny, this new viral sound clip is even more mind-boggling

You know the "Yanny vs. Laurel" video that has been all the rage this week? The one where depending on how you listened, you heard something different?

It tore families apart, ended friendships and led people to no longer trust what they were hearing. Not familiar with it? Then click here, if you dare.

Well, just as it seemed like we might be able to move on and try to repair our lives, another audio "challenge" is here to start the cycle all over again. Though, it's not exactly the same.

This time it's your mind playing tricks

We all know our brains can do amazing things, as it's how we interpret everything we see, hear, taste, smell, etc. Its power is on full display with this video clip, since you hear what you want to hear.

What you do is either look at or think of the word "brainstorm" or "green needle" and then play the video. Whichever of the two you are focusing on, that is what you will hear. Really.

In case you haven't tried it already, now switch to thinking of the other option and hit play again. Trippy, right?

Did you hear brainstorm? How about green needle? Maybe instead you heard a combination of the two, like "brain needle" or "green storm" when listening.

With Yanny vs. Laurel the issue was the pitch at which we were hearing the audio. Both words were present, just what we heard varied based on certain conditions.

Similarly, it is likely that both "brainstorm" and "green needle" are playing at different frequencies, with us picking up on either based on what we tell our brain to hear.

Yeah, science is cool

The video above features a toy that has been around for a while. The toy, incidentally, is named "Brainstorm." So, hearing that makes sense.

However, one explanation for why we hear "green needle" is the psychological effect known as "priming," wherein we basically convince ourselves of what we are about to hear. So, when the audio is played, we hear what our brain was told.

That will obviously not happen with all words, only those that sound somewhat alike, but when they do you get this.
