Stop Facebook from labeling you as liberal or conservative

Stop Facebook from labeling you as liberal or conservative

By now we are all pretty well aware that Facebook knows more about us than we ever realized. Thanks to revelations of how the social media site has invaded our privacy, Facebook has pretty much been forced to come clean on a lot of issues.

One thing we have learned is that part of your profile that Facebook has created involves your political leanings. Indeed, they think they know whether you are a conservative, a liberal or something in between.

For some, this may not be a big deal. Is it really a terrible thing if Facebook has identified our politics, especially if we've never really kept it a secret to begin with? Well, in a time when Facebook has gone too far, yeah, it's not really something to be excited about.

Why is Facebook doing this?

Facebook claims that it tries to figure out our political leanings to help provide targeted ads. A better understanding of its users means better targeting for ads, which in turn should lead to a better response to those ads. Click here to learn how to find out what Facebook thinks it knows about you politically.

Listen below to Kim Komando discussing this on her Consumer Tech Update podcast.

If you don't like the idea of Facebook having you labeled like that, you can make some changes to turn it off. Keep reading to find out how for both desktop and mobile.

Remove your Facebook political leanings

For Desktop users:

Go to the Facebook home page and follow these steps:

  • Click the arrow pointing down in the upper-right corner
  • Click Settings
  • Click Ads on the left side of the page
  • Click "Your information"
  • Click on "Your categories" - Under Your categories, you will see a list of items that help Facebook determine your targeted ads. Hover your cursor over the "US Politics" category and click the "X." This will remove the category.

Your political leanings may also be listed as one of your interests. To remove this follow these steps:

  • Click the arrow pointing down in the upper-right corner
  • Click Settings
  • Click Ads on the left side of the page
  • Click on "Your interests" - You will see numerous interests under several categories. To find the political category, click on the "more" drop-down menu.
  • Select "Lifestyle and Culture" - Here you will see a bunch of tags that correspond to certain interests. Find the listing for "political party" and tap the "X" to remove that label from your Facebook profile. (Note: If you haven't liked an ad or page dealing with politics, you might not see the "political party" tag in your interests. If not, you don't need to do anything.)

For mobile Facebook users:

Open your Facebook mobile app and follow these steps:

  • Tap the 3 lines in the lower right corner
  • Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy
  • Tap Privacy Shortcuts
  • Scroll down and tap More Settings
  • Scroll down and tap Ads
  • Tap Your Information
  • Scroll down to Your Categories
  • Tap Review and Manage Your Categories - from here, scroll down until you see the label that begins with "US Politics"
  • Tap the 3 dots to the right of the label
  • Tap Remove Category - (Note: You can remove any other categories here that you don't want to keep.)

Here's how to remove the political party tag from your interests on mobile:

  • Tap the 3 lines in the lower right corner
  • Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy
  • Tap Privacy Shortcuts
  • Scroll down and tap More Settings
  • Scroll down and tap Ads
  • Tap See all your interests under "Your Interests"
  • Tap the arrow next to Your top interests
  • Scroll down and tap Lifestyle and culture - here you will find things Facebook thinks you're interested in. To remove any of them, including your political leanings, tap the 3 vertical dots on the interest and a menu will open with a Remove interest option. Tap the X to remove it.
