Earlier this month, Samsung hinted that its much-hyped "Folding Phone" will launch in 2018. Now that edge-to-edge screens are all the rage in smartphones, folding screens can be the next big technological trend in smartphones!
But wait, it looks like one company has already beat Samsung, LG, Google, and Apple to the punch. Well, sort of.
Introducing the ZTE Axon M, the world's first folding smartphone.
ZTE Axon M
Chinese phone manufacturer ZTE just launched its new ZTE Axon M, the first dual-screen folding smartphone in the world.
The Axon M features two 5.2-inch full HD LCD displays that can be used side by side to mimic a larger 6.75-inch tablet display. With its 180-degree hinge, users can also fold the two screens together to form a traditional Android smartphone with a single display.
The phone has three dual screen viewing modes you can choose from - Extend (full screen), Dual (two apps side-by-side), and Mirror, in addition to the folded single-screen format.
According to ZTE CEO of Mobile Devices Lixin Cheng, "the ZTE Axon M is the beginning of a significant movement of smartphone capabilities, and ZTE is leading the way."
ZTE said that it will work with developers to help design and optimize apps that will take advantage of dual-screen smartphones. This is significant since Android now supports multi-window apps and the Axon M is the first smartphone that has the actual display hardware that's capable of supporting that.

Other note-worthy Axon M hardware specs include dual speakers, a 20-megapixel camera, a Snapdragon 821 processor and 4GB of RAM.
Although the ZTE Axon M is not exactly the same folding phone concept that Samsung and LG have, (frankly, it just looks like two smartphones glued together), it's a fresh wind of innovation that we hope will fast-track the technology.
Interested? The Axon M will be exclusively available in the U.S. through AT&T and it will cost you up to 30 monthly payments of $24.17.
