Don't fall for fake safety tips on social media

What we're talking about is a video that went viral on social media this week. The video was supposedly instructing people on how to make a phone charger using a 9V battery.

To build the charger you need a 9V battery, a car charger adapter, a spring from a pen, and of course a smartphone. The people behind the video went through an elaborate assembly process where they connected all the necessary parts.

Not only will this NOT charge your phone, but it's actually dangerous to try. An electrochemist told the "Daily Mail," "Charging a phone with a 9V battery is certainly not a good idea because of the voltage. You don't want to put anything past 4.5 volts."

Attempting to charge a gadget this way could lead to overheating and eventually an explosion. This is why the site that hosted the video ending up removing it.

How to keep your phone charged during a power outage

The easiest and safest way to charge your gadget during an emergency or power outage is with an external battery pack.
