We're all excited about this year's iPhones. Everyone seems to agree that we will see three separate iPhone models in 2017 - two "s" models that will likely be just upgraded versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and a premium 10th-anniversary edition "iPhone 8" that will rock all the groundbreaking features.
The new iPhone 8 features will likely include a 5.8-inch borderless, curved OLED display, integrated virtual home button, 3D sensing front camera and display embedded fingerprint scanner.
Now, there's a new leak that confirms two much-awaited features not just for the iPhone 8, but for the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus too.
Nikkei Asian Review reported that Wistron, a Taiwanese iPhone assembler, has confirmed that this year's 5.5-inch iPhone (most likely the iPhone 7s Plus) will have waterproofing and wireless charging features.
"Assembly process for the previous generations of (iPhones) have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit," Wistron CEO Robert Hwang have told reporters after the company's annual shareholder meeting.
Wistron is reportedly splitting the orders for the 5.5-inch iPhone with Foxconn Technology Group.
With this confirmation for the iPhone 7s Plus, it is likely the smaller iPhone 7s and the premium "iPhone 8" will have better waterproofing and wireless charging features as well.
If you can recall, the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7s Plus models already have an IP67 dust and waterproofing rating but this year's iPhones are rumored to have an even better IP68 rating, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S8. This means that it can withstand water immersion for over 30 minutes in up to about five feet of water.
New leaked iPhone 8 photos
Meanwhile, new leaked photos of the front and back housings of an alleged iPhone 8 have surfaced.
Reddit user kamikasky shared the images publicly on Imgur and Reddit earlier this week and claimed that they were provided by a "friend in the industry." Kamikasky also stated that Chinese manufacturers received the parts last week, which suggests that Apple has started mass production of the next iPhones.
The images are in line with all the current rumors about the premium iPhone 8 - vertical camera lens array and an edge to edge front display with smaller bezels.
Included in the leaks are what appear to be the back housings of the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus.
Interestingly, all the back housings seem to be made of glass, reaffirming the wireless charging feature not just for the premium iPhone 8, but for the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus as well.
