From basic commands, such as "turn up the volume," to complex commands such as, "give me my Flash Briefing," there are several things Amazon Alexa can do. But this always-listening device doesn't always get it right.

We recently told you how news reporters triggered Alexa to make unauthorized purchases. But unauthorized Amazon purchases are not limited to Alexa and the company is about to pay a huge sum to rectify the situation. Are you eligible for a refund?

How to check if you're eligible for a refund from Amazon

What we're talking about is an FTC lawsuit against Amazon that was recently settled. The retail giant didn't require a password for in-app purchases, which allowed children to spend hundreds of dollars playing "free" games by buying virtual goods like coins, stars and pet food without their parents' permission.

A federal court found Amazon liable for these charges and ordered the company to give refunds. Amazon has started offering refunds to consumers for these unauthorized in-app charges incurred by kids. Over $70 million in charges were racked up during a specific time-frame.

If you have a child under 18 years old and they made in-app purchases without your permission between November 2011 and May 2016, you can apply for a refund. All eligible consumers should receive an email notifying them of eligibility from Amazon.

If you believe you are eligible and have not received the email you can either:

  • Click here to check on Amazon's refund page
  • Or, log into your Amazon account and go to the Message Center. There you will find information about requesting a refund under Important Messages.

You are able to complete your refund request entirely online without needing to call Amazon or send anything through the mail. The deadline for submitting refund requests is May 28, 2018.

Amazon will review your refund request and may contact you if additional information is needed. If your request is approved, you will be refunded for the unauthorized charges that were added to your account.

If you have any questions about the refunds you can contact Amazon at 866-216-1072.
