Free Amazon Prime Video access is one of the best perks of being an Amazon Prime member. With it, you can watch tons of movies and shows for free, including Amazon originals you can't watch anywhere else.
Those include the multiple Emmy-nominated "Transparent" with Jeffrey Tambor, the romantic comedy "Catastrophe," alternate reality thriller "The Man in the High Castle" and popular car show "The Grand Tour."
You can watch Prime Videos on almost any smart TV and streaming device, including Amazon's own Fire boxes, Rokus and Google Chromecasts.
However, there's this one popular streaming box from Apple where Amazon's video service is notably absent... until now.
Amazon Prime Video
Buzzfeed reports that Apple is planning to announce Amazon Prime Video's arrival on the Apple TV during the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5 and the app is expected to go live as soon as this summer.
Amazon previously shunned the Apple TV for years, even declining to submit a Prime Video app to the 4th-gen Apple TV's App Store. Although users can view iOS Prime videos on Apple TVs via "Airplay," a native Apple TV app was never made available.
In 2015, the online shopping giant also started banning the Apple TV (together with the Chromecast) from being sold at its site to avoid "consumer confusion."
"When we sell those devices, we want our player — our Prime Video player — to be on the device, and we want it to be on the device with acceptable business terms," Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos earlier said about the Apple TV ban. "You can always get the player on the device. The question is, can you get it on there with acceptable business terms?"
With the expected announcement of the Amazon Prime Video app for the Apple TV, it looks like those acceptable business terms have been attained and an agreement between the two tech companies has been made.
This looks to be a win-win for both companies and for consumers, as well. Together with the arrival of the app to the Apple TV, we may likely see the return of the Apple TVs on Amazon's online store, as well.
Can't wait? Well, there is no exact date announced yet and no word on whether the Amazon Prime Video app will be likewise available to older Apple TVs (3rd-gen and earlier). We'll have to wait for the official WWDC announcement to know for sure.
