About two months ago, Google announced YouTube TV. For $35 a month, subscribers get access to live shows from nearly 40 networks and a DVR service with unlimited space.

Hulu announced their own live TV streaming service several months ago and they've finally launched it. It costs a little bit more than YouTube TV but there are more features.

The base plan of Hulu with Live TV (Beta) will cost $39.99 per month. Subscribers will get access to live and on-demand channels, original Hulu programming, and their existing streaming library of TV shows and movies.

The service will work for Chromecast, Apple TV, Xbox One, and iOS and Android devices. It will be coming to Samsung Smart TVs, Amazon devices and Rokutoo.

Features and costs

Hulu is the first paid TV service to offer this smorgasbord of content. The company's CEO Mike Hopkins said they want to become "a viewer’s primary source of television." People also have the option to add-on services for an additional fee. Here's a breakdown of each feature:

Base Plan

  • Live TV - Hulu struck a deal with 21st Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company, NBCUniversal, CBS Corporation, Turner Networks, A+E Networks and Scripps Networks Interactive Channels. Subscribers get access to over 50 news, sports, entertainment and kids’ channels and local broadcast from affiliate stations. The Food Network, FOX Business, Lifetime, Cartoon Network, FX and ESPN are just a few channels that come with the base plan.
  • Hulu's existing plan - Before the addition of live TV, Hulu customers paid $7.99 a month to watch movies, current episodes of TV shows, entire seasons of older shows and Hulu's original content. Hulu with Live TV (Beta) encompasses this existing plan.
  • Customizable experience - Each account can support up to six different user profiles. Viewers can select and save their favorite content to their profile and will suggest other content you might like. Profiles can be set up in "Kids Mode" to keep inappropriate content away from your children.
  • Follow Sports Teams - Whether your favorite team is playing on ESPN, FOX Sports, or TBS, Hulu can record the games for you. This feature is available for the NFL, NBA, NCAA, MLB, MLS, and NHL.

Add-ons

  • DVR - The base plan comes with 50 hours of storage. For an additional $14.99 a month, subscribers can upgrade to 200 hours of storage.
  • Multiple Screens - With the base plan, two viewers on the same account can watch the same content on two different screens. For an additional $14.99 a month, viewers can watch content on an unlimited number of screens inside their home and three screens outside the home.
  • Bundle - For an additional $19.99 a month, subscribers can bundle the DVR add-on and the Unlimited Screens add-on to save $10.
  • SHOWTIME - For an additional $8.99 per month, subscribers can add the SHOWTIME channel and get access to all of that channel's content.
