A smartphone is already an amazing gadget from the first time it's taken out of the box and powered on. These handy devices can be more powerful than some desktop computers were in the early 1990s.

Making them even more impressive are the seemingly countless apps that let you do such things as having face-to-face conversations with people halfway across the globe. There are literally millions of apps to choose from, with over 2 million in Apple's App Store alone. Now, Apple is making one of the most popular automation apps free!

How you can get the Workflow app for free

Apple announced this week that it has acquired the popular Workflow app. It's an automation tool that enables you to drag and drop any combination of actions to create powerful workflows for your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

This is great news for iOS users. The Workflow app previously cost $2.99, but Apple is now making it a free download in the App Store.

The Workflow app includes over 200 actions, including those for Contacts, Calendar, Maps, Music, Photos, Camera, Reminders, Safari, AirDrop, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, Evernote, iCloud Drive and Health just to name a few.

You can use the app to:

  • Build your own workflows with a drag-and-drop interface
  • Combine the best features of all your other apps together
  • Mix and match hundreds of actions to create quick shortcuts
  • Manage your media
  • Share content
  • Make animated GIFs
  • Add a home screen icon that calls a loved one
  • Get directions to the nearest coffee shop in one tap
  • Send a message, including the last screenshot that you took

Your Workflow creations can be launched from inside the app, from other apps using Workflow's Action Extension, or from the Today Widget. You can even export a workflow as a standalone app on your home screen. The app opens countless possibilities of what you can do with your Apple gadgets.
