The much-awaited Samsung Galaxy S8 is set to be released soon and rumors high and low are marching in non-stop. We already know some of the S8's likely specifications, thanks to a number of timely "reveals."
Well, with all the leaks rapidly emerging these past few days, this is turning out to be the worst-kept tech secret this side of the Nintendo Switch.
A set of photos recently posted in Slash Leaks just revealed the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the bigger Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus in their full glory.
Virtual Home Button
Slash Leaks released this photo yesterday displaying what appears to be the front of a Samsung Galaxy S8 with its edgeless design dubbed the "Infinity Display."
As previously rumored, with its smaller bezels, you can see that the S8 does away with the physical home button and is replaced with a virtual on-screen version instead. Honestly, this is our first real look at what this virtual button will look like.
Notice that even with the transparent plastic protective case wrapped around it, the Samsung Galaxy S8's almost all-screen front is beautifully stunning.
Slash Leaks also posted this picture showing the rear of the alleged Samsung Galaxy S8. Notice that aside from the rumored 12MP rear camera and the LED flash, another sensor, which appears to be a fingerprint reader, is included.
If you look closely, the camera module in the leaked picture appears to be a single lens camera, which suggests that this is the smaller 5.7-inch model. The 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 Plus is rumored to have a dual lens rear camera.
Both models' rear camera will reportedly have optical image stabilization, a dual-LED flash and phase detection auto-focus.
We're a little bit worried about the position of the fingerprint sensor, though. It looks to be positioned way too close to the camera lens, which may lead to frequent smudging.
Two models side by side
Early Tuesday, another set of Galaxy S8 photos was posted in Slash Leaks by Dimitri12. Dimitri12 is known for a number of authentic leaks in the past and these new images are said to have been sourced from a company that makes gadget screen protectors.
The first photo shows the two models of the S8, the 6.2-inch S8 Plus and the 5.7-inch S8, side-by-side.
Notice that the bigger model has its always-on lock screen displayed (with the virtual home button) and the smaller model shows off the beautiful Infinity Display when it's off.
Front and Top
Dimitri12 also posted additional images of the Galaxy S8's top bezel front camera and sensor array and top SIM card slot (shown below).
Aside from the obvious front camera, the top bezel appears to have a variety of additional sensors. Could these be the sensors for iris scanning and facial recognition?
What we know so far
Now that we have solid evidence of what the new pair of Samsung Galaxy S8 phones will look like, aside from the virtual home button, the Infinity Display and the rear fingerprint reader, what other rumored features have we gathered so far?
Here's a rundown:
Based on an earlier leak by Evan Blass, the new S8 phones will definitely retain the headphone jack.
At least one of the S8 models is rumored to have an Exynos 8895 chip, a Mali-G71 GPU for even better graphical performance over the S7 and a whopping 6GB of RAM.
The bigger model may rock the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and reports are saying that it may have an 8GB RAM upgrade. The 835 processor will be made with Samsung's 10-nanometer technology, allowing for better power efficiency compared to its predecessor.
Newer AMOLED screen technology might debut on the new Galaxy and the Plus version may even have a higher resolution 4K display with astounding pixel density.
The S8 may also retain the same elemental water and dust proofing rating of the S7 and S7 Edge at IP68.
Software wise, we may see the debut of Samsung's own AI virtual assistant nicknamed Bixby, the S Health app and Samsung DeX.
We also have the likely release date for these much-anticipated smartphones.
As we reported earlier, Samsung is still set to unveil the Galaxy S8 at its Unpacked event on March 29 in New York City.
The release date was reported to be April 21 but it looks like it will be pushed back a week later on April 28. Preorders are still set to start on April 10.
