We've been monitoring iPhone 8 rumors as fast as they come. Talks of three separate iPhone models including a premium version that has all these bells and whistles:
- A 5.8 -inch borderless, curved OLED display
- No home button
- An all-glass sandwich design with a stainless steel frame and virtually no bezel
- Facial and Gesture Control
- Better waterproofing
- Wireless charging
If you're still wondering if Apple will finally add wireless charging to its next iPhone, this fresh bit of news might help sway the odds in its favor.
On Monday, news emerged that Apple has joined the Wireless Power Consortium, a group of companies that sets the industry standard for the Qi wireless charging technology.
Among the members of this consortium are other tech heavy-hitters like Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic, Huawei, Nokia and Lenovo.
According to a statement given by Apple to Business Insider:
"Apple is joining the Wireless Power Consortium to be able to participate and contribute ideas to the open, collaborative development of future wireless charging standards. We look forward to working together with the WPC and its members."
Qi wireless charging
Qi (pronounced as "chee") wireless charging is already used by major smartphones from the likes of Samsung, Sony, LG, and Nokia.
With the Qi charging method, a gadget is placed on a charging mat or stand to juice up with the use of magnetic induction, instead of plugging in a charging cord directly to the device.
Qi charging is nothing new to Apple. In fact, the company is already using a proprietary version of the standard with the Apple Watch. And since it's a proprietary, Apple's version of Qi charging has been tweaked and it's not compatible with other Qi charging accessories.
Hopefully, that will change with Apple joining the consortium and standard Qi accessories will work with future iPhones equipped with the technology.
Although Qi wireless charging is certainly a welcome (albeit late) addition to the iPhone's feature set, this may shelf plans for the revolutionary long-distance wireless charging the iPhone 8 was rumored to have.
That's too bad since long-distance wireless charging would have definitely put the next iPhone over the top and definitely ahead of the curve.
Will the addition of Qi wireless charging to the next iPhone make it a must-have upgrade? Drop us a comment!
