Calls, texts, data, hidden fees - cellphone service plans can be so expensive. But with a messaging app like WhatsApp, texts, calls, and group chatting is all free! If you always have access to Wi-Fi then it can be a cheaper alternative.

WhatsApp has been around for eight years and is one of the most used messaging apps in the world. They just made two-step verification available for all of their users. If you use this app then I suggest you enable this feature right now.

What is two-step verification?

With two-step verification,  you must verify your identity twice before you can log in to your account. Suppose you try to register your phone number in WhatsApp on a new device. Once you type in your number, the app will ask you to verify that it's really you and not a hacker. They will text you a code and you must type it in to access your account.

How to set up two-step verification

  • Open WhatsApp and select the "Settings" icon located in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  • Select "Account" from the list of options and then select "Two-Step Verification."
  • Select "Enable" and enter a six-digit passcode that you won't forget. The app will ask you to enter the code a second time to confirm it.
  • You can also add an email address to the account. It will help you reset your passcode in case you do forget it. If you choose to skip this step then you won't be able to register your phone number if you forget the passcode.

Whenever you have the option to add a layer of security to any of your online accounts, you should take advantage of that opportunity. Facebook offers several ways to protect your account.

This new option is great and it will help protect your account from hackers. But be advised that WhatsApp has recently had several scams and privacy concerns.

There are other apps with free messaging services. Signal Private Messenger, available for iOS and Android, is an end-to-end encrypted messaging app. Another alternative for sending free and secure messages through encryption is Telegram Messenger. It's available for iOSAndroid and Windows devices.
