Do you remember Harambe? He was a gorilla at a zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio that was killed by zookeepers after a 3-year-old boy fell into his enclosure. The incident happened in May 2016 and it received international attention. There was controversy over the decision to kill him but zoo officials and other primate experts said they had no choice.
Then the internet took it and ran with it. An unfortunate situation became a long running joke. There were Harambe memes, t-shirts and parody songs. And now the internet is talking about Harambe again because of an eBay bid.
On January 28, a Flamin' Hot Cheeto resembling Harambe was placed on eBay with a starting price of $11.99. On February 6, the price steadily climbed from $15 to tens of thousands of dollars. The winning bid was a whopping $99,900! The crunchy snack received a total of 132 bids from 50 bidders.
When the seller, valuestampsinc, discovered the oddly shaped Cheeto, he knew he had something special. Here is the product description he posted for the item:
"I opened up a bag of Flamin Hot Cheetos and as soon as I looked inside I came across this unique Cheetos [sic] that looks like Harambe the gorilla. This item is one of a kind! It measures up to about 1 1/2 inches in length. This item up for bid is only for this unique Cheetos [sic], bag not included. This makes a great collectible for anyone who appreciates rare items! Please Pay with PayPal".
It's possible that all the bidders know each other and this is simply a stunt to get attention. Instead of exchanging money, the friends may see the amusement in making an eBay bid go viral. But it's also possible that someone out there does believe a Harambe-shaped Cheeto is worth nearly $100,000. Which scenario do you think is more likely?
Bids on other Cheetos shaped like Harambe and other objects have been posted to eBay. I'm not sure if they will have the same success but you never know!
