After countless personal sacrifices to serve our country, things aren't always easy for our veterans and their families. In fact, readjusting to civilian life is often difficult for a number of reasons.
Finding employment is just one of the many challenges our veterans face. Over the next five years, Amazon is aiming to change that. In 2016, CEO Jeff Bezos revealed that the company was looking to hire 25,000 veteran workers, as well as military spouses. An additional 10,000 jobs were also being opened up in the area of cloud computing - a skill set that's in high demand within the technology industry.
Although Bezos announced the company's plans in the spring of 2016, this past Thursday, Amazon officially signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor to set the plan in motion. Part of which includes the creation of a unique apprenticeship program. Isn't that awesome!
Those selected for this apprenticeship program will go through 16 weeks of specialized technical training. After that, they'll participate in a 12-month apprenticeship with Amazon that offers competitive compensation.
On Amazon's military recruitment page, Bezos shares the following: "We actively seek leaders who can invent, think big, have a bias for action and deliver results on behalf of our customers. These principles look very familiar to men and women who have served our country in the armed forces, and we find that their experience leading people is invaluable in our fast-paced work environment."
Since 2011, Amazon has employed approximately 10,000 veterans. However, this initiative is meant to boost that number significantly. And Amazon isn't alone in the effort. Around 200 top employers are also developing similar programs as part of the Joining Forces initiative. Some of these companies include Redbook, UPS, CitiGroup, Verizon, Xerox, and others.
