Cast your vote for Monopoly's new game pieces!
Monopoly

Monopoly has been a light-hearted introduction into the real estate business for several generations. But before you could start battling over properties, the first score to settle is who gets to play with which token. We all have a favorite that we prefer to play with.

But soon, your favorite token may get retired and replaced. The classic board game will be turning 82 this year; maybe it's time for a "facelift." It will be up to us to decide who stays and who goes.

Hasbro, the toy and board game company behind Monopoly, recently launched the MONOPOLY Token Madness Vote. It's a worldwide poll where fans can pick the eight tokens they like the most. People will be able to choose from over 50 options; eight of those options are the current pieces. Voting ends January 31 and the eight tokens with the most votes will be announced on World Monopoly Day, which is March 19.

"Only time will tell if fans will decide to stay with the classics, keep a few favorites or pick an entirely new line-up of tokens," said Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming.

Instead of just filling out an online ballot, Hasbro set up a cute, interactive site as the voting platform. You enter Rich Uncle Pennybags' (Mr. Monopoly) mansion, use the arrow keys to navigate the rooms, select up to eight tokens and submit your vote. When I voted, sometimes the navigation arrows covered tokens. It may help to adjust your browser's zoom to 67 or 75 percent so that you can see all the options.

You can choose from different types of animals, vehicles, and all sorts of other items. The first room has the current pieces that come in standard editions but a lot of the other options steer away from the old-fashioned look of the game. You can select symbols that are culturally relevant today, such as emojis, a pound sign (hashtag), and a thumbs up for social media "likes."

The original tokens included the top hat, thimble, battleship and boot. The dog and wheel barrel were added in the 1950s and a fan vote in 2013 replaced the iron with a cat. Watch the video below for some more history about Monopoly.

What do you think? Is it time for new pieces or should Monopoly keep the current set? Let me know in the comments section below.
