I've said it before and I'll say it again. Smartphones are simply an amazing piece of technology. The things we can do with these nifty little gadgets have changed the way we conduct our lives.

From changing the way we communicate with others to using the seemingly unlimited number of available apps, the possibilities are endless.

Unfortunately, all of these activities can be a serious drain on the data from your mobile provider. Some users have been lucky enough to have legacy plans that give them unlimited data. Verizon is about to end that for some of its customers.

Verizon's big change

Verizon stopped the practice of offering unlimited data plans to new customers way back in 2011. So for you to be impacted by this new change, you would have to be with the mobile provider for many years. Longtime customers with Verizon had the opportunity to keep their unlimited data plan when these plans went away for others.

What's happening now is, Verizon customers who average more than 200GB of data over several months will have to switch to limited plans by the middle of February. If they don't switch, Verizon will disconnect them from the network.

A Verizon spokesperson told Arstechnica, "Because our network is a shared resource and we need to ensure all customers have a great mobile experience with Verizon, we are notifying a small group of customers on unlimited plans who use more than 200GB a month that they must move to a Verizon Plan by February 16, 2017."

As a Verizon customer, if you get disconnected you have 50 days to reactivate your account. To do so, you need to sign up for one of the limited data plans.

When a Verizon customer goes over their monthly data limit on the limited plans, they get reduced speeds. They do have the option to purchase extra 4G LTE data.

This isn't the only change Verizon has made recently. We told you earlier that the company is raising the cost of its activation and upgrade fee and is eliminating two-year contracts.

Now, 200GB seems like a lot of data. I don't think I could ever hit that number, but obviously, there are people out there who do. This change could really impact their monthly bill.

Currently, the highest data plan offered by Verizon is 100GB + 2GB per line. That plan costs $450 per month and doesn't include line access fees. Yikes!

It's estimated that with talk and text fees, those who were able to keep the legacy unlimited data plan pay around $100 per month. As you can see, the move to a 100GB plan is a huge jump in price.
