High school teacher gets an unexpected Christmas gift from his students

Forget a shiny red apple, how about a brand new pair of red Vans sneakers? That's the Christmas gift one teacher received from his students. His genuine reaction was filmed and posted to Twitter on Monday and has since gone viral.

Taylor Kerby, a high school psychology teacher at Edgewood High School in West Covina, California, complimented one of his student's Vans on the first day of school. He mentioned that he wanted a pair but around the holidays his students realized that he still hadn't purchased any. On a day he was absent from school, the students from his fifth-period class discussed a plan to all chip in and buy him the shoes.

One of Mr. Kerby's students, 17-year-old Dyani Heredia-Urias, posted a video of him opening his gift on Twitter earlier this week. So far, it has over 53,000 retweets and over 145,000 likes. She told the Huffington Post that she believes the video went viral because Mr. Kerby is so lovable and sincere in his reaction. Watch below to see for yourself!

The Twitter account behind the shoe company even responded to the original post and then retweeted it to their account. Other Twitter users have been tweeting at The Ellen Show, hoping that Ellen DeGeneres will feature the teacher and his students on her talk show.

“At the end of this turbulent year, when compassion seemed traded in for egotism, our souls needed reminding that goodness is still better than making a good point,” Kerby told the Huffington Post. "I’m sincerely proud of my kids for actively reminding the world that kindness isn’t out of fashion.”

Earlier this year, a student at a different school also surprised one of his teachers with his dream sneakers. Click here to watch the touching video.
