Virtual assistants are starting to play a bigger role in our smart-enhanced homes. There are just so many things they can help you with. Everything from playing music, turning the lights on and off or even reading you the news.

Amazon's friendly virtual assistant is Alexa. You can access Alexa with Amazon's Echo or Echo Dot. On top of Alexa's already popular features, a new skill is being added that will change the way you look at cooking.

Allrecipes Alexa Skill puts 60,000 meals at your fingertips and it's free to use. Not only will you get step-by-step, hands-free cooking instructions, but you can also get meal suggestions based on the items you have. Just check your cupboards and ask Alexa to recommend what to make based on those ingredients and how much time you have to prepare the meal. It's that simple!

You can also get recipe reminders. Just ask Alexa how much of a particular ingredient is needed while you're cooking and she will let you know without missing a beat.

If you're heading to the grocery store, the Allrecipes Skill will send you an ingredient list. Just ask Alexa and she will text you any recipe.

Here is a video demonstration on how the skill works.

Enabling the skill

Once you've downloaded the Amazon Alexa app, you just need to enable the Allrecipes Skill. Here is how:

  • Open the app - Open the Alexa app on your gadget.
  • Enable Allrecipes Skill - Tap "Skills" in the menu and search for Allrecipes. Tap "Enable."
  • Link your account - Link your Allrecipes account through Facebook, Google Plus or by entering your Allrecipes credentials.
  • Ask Alexa - Now you can ask Alexa to search and save your favorite recipes straight from the Allrecipes website.
