Amazon just announced the newest version of its Echo Dot and this could bring more homes closer to the voice-controlled vision that the company has for the future.
The Echo Dot is a hockey puck-sized version of the Amazon Echo - the voice-controlled gadget that brings Amazon's virtual assistant Alexa to your home. Although the Dot will not have the Echo's cylindrical speaker, it does come with a smaller built-in speaker, or if you prefer, you can also connect any Bluetooth speaker wirelessly or any regular speaker via the built-in 3.5mm jack.
The Echo Dot even has the same seven microphones as its bigger sibling. This mic setup can pinpoint an individual's voice commands from across a room and even filter out extraneous noise and background music.
Working together with this mic array is what Amazon calls "Echo Spatial Perception" technology. This will detect multiple Echos in your home network and will ensure that only the nearest one will respond to a voice command.
The whole Echo line was designed by Amazon's to become your smart home hub. With Alexa, the company offers a multitude of voice-activated functions such as smart appliance control, music playback, news reporting, web searching. Amazon is also constantly updating the Echo line with new features and skills.
