Earlier in the year, Facebook users were up in arms over its news feed. At the problem's core, Facebook was accused of intentionally hiding stories that favor conservative or “right wing” opinions from appearing in their Trending Topics section.
In response, Facebook replaced its Trending Topics human curators with an algorithm on August 27. But as you can guess, now Facebook users are upset about the content the algorithm came up with, on a day filled with raw emotions.
Yesterday, on the 15-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Facebook promoted an article in Trending Topics claiming 9/11 was an inside job and had iron-clad evidence that proves “bombs were planted in Twin Towers.”
To add to the drama, it should be noted that this isn't the first problem Facebook users have had with its news feed algorithms. Earlier in the year, there was another trending story claiming that Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly was fired for supporting Hillary Clinton and another called Senator John McCain's daughter Meghan, Miss Piggy.
When contacted, Facebook representatives said they were aware of a "hoax article" showing up and were working to remove it immediately. Facebook also said it will create a team of people to monitor what the algorithm comes up with in the future.
For those who don't know, the trending topics section is off to the right side of the news feed.
