Ransomware attacks have become the favorite way for criminals to steal your money. They're easy to pull off. They pay well. And there's very little risk of getting caught.
Who are these extortionists targeting? Everyone. From you and me, to giant public and private institutions.
A large-scale attack hit the University of Calgary in Canada this week. School officials caved into the thieves' demands, shelling out a ransom amount equivalent to $16 thousand.
Unfortunately, there's no guarantee the crooks will keep their end of the bargain. And that seems to be the case in this instance, as more than a week after paying, the university's IT department still hasn't recovered all of their compromised data.
