Have you ever seen a GIF? You probably have. Those are mini-movies that are usually funny or heartwarming quick bites where, in just a few seconds, you see cats playing the piano, babies being adorable and the like.
But, if you've ever tried to figure out how to make a GIF of your own, you know it's a hassle, if not impossible. So, you let other people create them and you just watch.
Now, there's a free and incredibly easy way to make GIFs and then share them with your family and friends. It starts with your iPhone's Live Photos. When you take photos, Live Photos records a few seconds before and after the photo to create a short movie.
Google's brand new app Motion Stills takes those Live Photos and makes them better. It uses a video stabilization algorithm to take out all the shaking in your image.
It also creates really unique images by freezing the background or creating a panning shot. The effect makes still photos suddenly come alive. You can also stitch together multiple mini movies into a montage.
Motion Stills' loop optimization creates high-quality GIFs. It automatically finds the best starting and ending images, and takes out blurry shots. Plus, bonus, it takes out "pocket shots," which is when your Live Photos capture the image of you putting your phone back in your pocket.
Note: The Motion Stills free app is only for iPhones and iOS tablets.
